LewisGale Hospital Pulaski Earns Top Recognition for Quality Care
October 19, 2012
Pulaski, VA, October 2012 – For the second year in a row, LewisGale Hospital Pulaski has been named one of the nation’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures™ by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in America. The hospital is one of only 244 U.S. hospitals to earn this distinction two years in a row, since The Joint Commission started publishing its report last year.
“To once again be named among the nation’s Top Performers is a testament of our commitment to high-quality, evidence-based care that’s linked to better patient outcomes,” said Mark Nichols, CEO, LewisGale Hospital Pulaski. “I want to commend our physicians and staff for helping us to achieve this distinction.”
The Joint Commission recognized LewisGale Hospital Pulaski for achieving excellence in performance on its accountability measures during 2011 for heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. For example, to be recognized as a top performer for heart failure care, the hospital had to achieve (1) a 95 percent or greater score on each of several clinical processes proven to give patients the best possible outcomes and (2) the hospital had to achieve a composite score of 95 percent or greater for overall heart failure care.
Out of 3,336 hospitals submitting 2011 accountability measures data to The Joint Commission, LewisGale Hospital Pulaski was one of only 620 to meet or exceed the targeted rates of performance.
“When we raise the bar and provide the proper guidance and tools, hospitals have responded with excellent results,” said Mark R. Chassin, M.D., F.A.C.P., M.P.P., M.P.H., president, The Joint Commission. “This capacity for continual improvement points toward a future in which quality and safety defects are dramatically reduced and high reliability is sought and achieved with regularity. Such day-to-day progress will slowly but surely transform today’s health care system into one that achieves unprecedented performance outcomes for the benefit of the patients.”
In addition to being included in The Joint Commission’s “Improving America’s Hospitals” annual report, LewisGale Hospital Pulaski is recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check website, www.qualitycheck.org. The Top Performer program will be featured in the November issue of The Joint Commission Perspectives and the October issue of The Joint Commission: The Source.
